Units
Genetics
Since genetic disorders have become a crucial part of laboratory medicine, we recently established our ‘Genetics Unit’ which provides comprehensive testing of genetic diseases that affect the lives of a substantial number of people.
Our ‘Genetics Unit’, through its biochemical, molecular and cytogenetic services, offers testing for a wide variety of genetic disorders ranging from single gene disorders to whole chromosome aneuploidy.
In the unit we also offer genetic counseling done by experienced consultants who work closely with our clinical pathologists to ensure optimal care and support to our patients. Consultancy services in the unit include pre-marital and prenatal counseling. The clinical geneticists are always available for inquiries from our referring physicians to discuss cases related to genetic diseases, with or without morphologic abnormalities.
The scope of work covers hereditary and genetic disorders such as: hereditary anaemias (thalassemia), mental disabilities, genetic causes of infertility and sex determination.
Immunoassay
The scope of immunoassay covers wide range of tests including:
- Therapeutic drug monitoring for measuring digoxin, anti-epileptic drugs and Immunosuppressant drugs (such as cyclosporine and tacrolimus).
- Hormones such as thyroid profile, sex hormones and growth hormones.
- Specific proteins such as ASOT, inflammatory markers and Immunoglobulins.
- Tumor markers for several body organs.
- Infectious diseases such as hepatitis viruses, TORCH and H.pylori.
- Vitamins and folic acid.
Among the tests done in the Immunoassay unit is Seminal fluid analysis; both manual and computerized (CASA). We follow the latest guidelines recommended in the WHO manual for processing, analyzing and reporting results. This provides the clinicians with reliable data to support his/her decisions.
Our Immunoassay unit is ISO 15189:2012 accredited, which is an international recognition of our unit commitment to quality, competency and reliable test results.
Parasitology
Our Parasitology unit is highly specialized and has an extensive experience in the field of testing for parasitic infections. The unit involves testing for various stages of parasites using different methods. Parasitology tests encompass analysis of urine and stool samples. The unit is also specialized in direct diagnosis of blood parasites such as malaria, filaria and leishmania in blood films.
Special testing for the newly emergent protozoa in stool such as Cryptosporedia, Microsporedia , Cyclospora and Isospora, which are among the common, yet overlooked, causes of chronic diarrhea.
Parasitolgy unit is ISO 15189:2012 accredited which ensures that test results are of the highest quality and accuracy.
Molecular biology
Diagnostic molecular biology is a fast growing area of laboratory medicine and has the potential for major impact on clinical medicine.
The scope of detection includes:
- Pathogenic agents such as: Hepatitis C virus (HCV), Hepatitis B virus (HBV), Cytomegalovirus (CMV) and mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB).
- Diagnosis of hereditary anemias such as: Thalassemia (Alpha & Beta) and Sickle cell anemia (HbS).
- Diagnosis of hereditary causes of increased blood clotting (hypercoagulable status) such as: Factor V lieden, prothrombin gene and MTHFR gene mutations.
- Genetic testing for the common inflammatory disease “Familial Mediterranean fever”.
- Genetic testing for blood malignancies (Leukemias, Lymphomas, and plasma cell myeloma) which aid in the classification, prognosis and follow up (e.g: BCR-ABL, JAK 2 mutation, and PML-RARA).
- Genetic analysis for personalized medicine used for treatment of malignancies (KRAS, EGFR, etc ….).
Our unit adopts the highest standards for testing and result reporting and it is ISO 15189:2012 accredited.
Microbiology
Immunology
In our Immunology unit, we have a long experience in performing and interpreting tests to diagnose and follow up a wide range of autoimmune disorders, such as systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, GIT auto immune disorders (such as inflammatory bowel and celiac diseases), autoimmune hepatitis and thyroid diseases.
Using the latest technology in the field, we are able to provide our customers with very accurate results in a short time frame.
The unit consultants are ready to collaborate with physicians seeking assistance in diagnosing and treating complex or unusual disorders.
Clinical Chemistry
In our clinical chemistry unit, we provide routine and high tech specialized assays for our customers’ optimum care. We offer a comprehensive range of chemistry based testing for diagnostic, prognostic, and disease monitoring purposes through measuring levels of chemical components in blood, urine and other body fluids.
Clinical chemistry is the unit where you can have a comprehensive metabolic profile to check the metabolism of glucose, lipids, iron, calcium, vitamins and proteins as well as to assess the functions of different organs such as kidney, liver, heart and pancreas.
Being ISO 15189:2012 accredited, the highest standards for test performance and result reporting are adopted ensuring highly accurate and reliable test results.
Hematology
Pathology
All our Pathology results are supervised by eminent professors in the field.
We perform gross and microscopic examination and interpretation of tissue specimens including core biopsies, endoscopic biopsies and surgical excisions. Cytological examination for all types of biological fluids and fine needle aspirates is done as well to help identifying the nature of the cells in such samples.
A broad array of specialized techniques is available to augment routine morphologic examination such as special stains, enzymatic histochemistry and immunohistochemical stains that detect the expression of several antigens on the tissue level, ex: ER, PR and HER-2 and others.
